Do you know that while as an undergraduate, I only stayed in the school hostel in my 1st year and had to move off campus in my 2nd year through to my final year?

You can’t imagine what happened. It wasn’t easy. I would have liked to stay in the school hostel, but I wasn’t given accommodation as it was only reserved for a few JAMBITES till they could find there way around. Why? You may ask, because of the population!

This was how my journey of living off campus began. I looked for accommodation like kilode, all the houses I saw that I really liked were either too expensive or far from campus and you know, as a student, there is no way you can avoid going to school to read, keeping up with your course mates, lectures, discussion groups…and as a lady, you better live close else.

My Landlady then, a widow, so planned it in a way that every month she collects rent from each of us (her tenants). Say Room 1’s rent is due by January, Room 2 will be due at February ….till the 24th room. So some months, two of her tenants pay in something into her account, thus she has income coming in every month. Hmmmm, you can imagine. And she still collects the rents till tomorrow. In one of our jists (story telling moments), She made mentioned of how this particular hostel was built once by her husband (may his soul rest in peace) from money he borrowed and today, long after he is gone, his family keeps collecting rental income.

This is the power of passive income (rental income from real estate). You do the work once and it keeps paying you for life.

Do you know every year millions of student apply for Jamb? In 2018, 1.6 million students applied and after the screening process, each school gets to admit thousands of student every session. Out of all these, the school hostel facilities are barely able to accommodate 1/4 of the new students, not to talk about the old students. So Landlords are really at it. This is one area where one can invest in and you won’t regret it.
